Project Daydream
What happens when thought wanders without an immediate external demand?
Thought can move without an immediate external demand, revisiting memories and forming unexpected associations. Project Daydream asks whether productive spontaneous cognition can be characterized well enough to investigate an artificial analogue.
Working scope
Spontaneous internally generated cognition, including associative drift, mind-wandering, incubation, unexpected cross-domain connections, and potentially useful idea emergence without immediate external task demand.
These phenomena are not presumed to share one mechanism or to be uniformly productive. Random output, extra search, and deliberate imagination are alternative explanations to distinguish.
When inquiry is internally initiated
Illustrative scenario · Not an executed experiment or adopted protocol
Consider a system that revisits an unresolved arrangement while no immediate task asks it to do so. An association brings an earlier constraint into a new context. The research question is what initiated this movement, how it developed, and whether anything useful emerged from it.
Spontaneous thought, mind-wandering, associative drift, and incubation describe possible parts of this inquiry. They need not share a mechanism or produce insight. Unlike Imagination’s deliberate construction, the proposed emphasis is on initiation without an immediate external task. Extra search, random generation, and retrospective selection of useful outputs remain explanations a future study would need to distinguish.
